This book is the first volume in my MCA Chief Engineer and Second Engineer oral exam preparation series.

It has been written for management-level marine engineering candidates who are preparing for their MCA oral examination and want practical, realistic answers rather than generic textbook explanations.

Inside, you will find over 50 carefully selected questions and answers covering the type of subjects that regularly come up in senior engineering orals. The questions have been chosen from my own experience, feedback from candidates, and the sort of practical shipboard knowledge that examiners expect you to understand.

There is a ridiculous amount of information that could be asked in these exams, and it is very easy to waste time revising everything without knowing what really matters. This book is designed to help focus your revision by covering important topics in a clear, structured and oral-exam-friendly way.

The aim is not to memorise pages of theory word for word, but to build the understanding and structure needed to give a professional answer under pressure.

This volume covers a wide range of management-level topics, including main engine performance, fuel systems, boilers, electrical systems, emergency equipment, legislation, class and flag, MARPOL, ISM, firefighting, stability, maintenance, surveys and Chief Engineer responsibilities.

This is Volume 1 of the Chief Engineer and Second Engineer oral exam series. Volume 2 is also available, and I strongly recommend purchasing both volumes together. They are designed to complement each other, with Volume 2 adding further questions, more advanced discussion points, and additional practical topics that are highly relevant for MCA management-level candidates.

I also recommend using these books alongside my EOOW Oral Exam book. The knowledge from EOOW level is still extremely relevant, and examiners can still ask basic engineering questions at senior level. A strong Chief or Second Engineer should be able to answer both the simple questions and the management-level ones.
